The Southern California News Group seeks a reporter

The Southern California News Group is seeking a reporter to cover the thriving dining scene in Orange County, home to more than 8,000 restaurants, including several that have been awarded Michelin Stars, Bib Gourmand recognition or other honors

Responsibilities:

  • Cover changes to the Orange County dining scene, including the openings of new restaurants and the closures of longtime establishments
  • Become well sourced with local chefs and restaurateurs to stay ahead of what they’re planning in terms of new restaurants and concepts
  • Develop broader stories about dining trends that will be of interest to readers outside Orange County that can run throughout Southern California and, possibly, the San Francisco Bay Area
  • Work with your editor to use analytics to identify topics to cover and the best ways to present information to digital readers
  • Contribute to weekly newsletters that target restaurant stories to interested readers

Qualifications:

  • Ability to multitask, meet deadlines and accurately fact-check information
  • Experience covering the restaurant industry or similar topics
  • Experience using social media to find story ideas and sources and to promote coverage
  • Excellent communication and networking skills
  • The job will involve traveling to restaurants throughout Orange County and possibly surrounding areas
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required
  • At least three years of professional journalism experience
  • At least two years of experience as a writer covering restaurants or comparable topics

Salary: The hourly wage is $19.23 – $24.04
