The Seattle Times seeks an assistant metro editor – mornings

The Seattle Times, a family-owned news organization and one of the nation’s premier regional news sources, is seeking a savvy and well-rounded Assistant Metro Editor to wake up the website each morning. This fast-paced job focuses on breaking and trending news, helping readers navigate their day. Working with a morning reporter, and a collaborative morning desk team, this editor will often focus on stories about traffic, crime, weather as well as those stories that put our region into greater context and pieces that just make readers smile.

Schedule: This editor will work 6 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, the same shift as the morning breaking news reporter.

Responsibilities:

  • Thrive in high-pressure situations when deadlines are tight.
  • Edit a wide range of topics, including crime, law enforcement, government and politics, and human-interest features, with the ability to quickly come up to speed on unfamiliar subjects.
  • Work with a breaking news reporter and other journalists to identify trending topics and prioritize news needs.
  • Identify and help creatively tell uniquely Northwest stories.
  • Collaborate with your fellow assistant metro editors, including helping to edit stories from other reporters.
  • Be inclusive in coverage, making sure stories include a range of sources and that they fairly represent the rich cultural diversity of our region.
  • Be willing to experiment, try new story topics and formats, and evaluate and learn from the outcomes of those experiments, always with an eye toward reaching audiences and driving subscriptions.
  • Use digital tools to monitor audience interest in stories and regularly offer headline tests to boost readership.
  • Select, edit and publish wire stories with regional interest.
  • Work with colleagues in Photo, Graphics/Interactives and the Digital Audience Team to coordinate visuals and digital assets for stories.
  • Fill occasional weekend, evening or holiday editing shifts as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Experience: At least two years of managerial experience at a newsgathering organization.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree or relevant equivalent experience.
  • Requires excellent grammar and language skills, and familiarity with digital news production, social media and analytics.
  • Must be able to analyze facts and make judgments about relevance, newsworthiness, fairness, etc., under pressure and on deadline. This editor should expect to touch three to five stories each day.
  • Must have the ability to edit stories using WordPress or other content management systems used by the newsroom.
  • Requires social media skills, including the ability to use X, Facebook, LinkedIn and other social networks to find potential news stories.
  • Must understand and uphold the standards, ethics and mission of journalism at The Seattle Times, regardless of platform.
  • Knowledge of local news and local newsmakers is a plus.

Compensation: The full salary range for this position is $70,400 to $96,900. We typically pay between $70,400 and $88,000, depending on experience and qualifications.
