The Sacramento Bee seeks an assistant managing editor

The Sacramento Bee is seeking an Assistant Managing Editor to lead our local news coverage and collaborate with a dynamic news team focused on breaking news and producing enterprise, accountability and investigative journalism. The Sacramento region offers a vast array of news opportunities for our award-winning newsroom, and this editor plays a pivotal role in creating innovative and engaging ways to cover the capital of California and Northern California.

Local news here is also state news, and this position opens many doors to crafting coverage for the Sacramento region. This editor works closely with our investigative, enterprise, utility, visuals and political editors to help us deliver high-impact coverage of the area’s growing communities. The Assistant Managing Editor leads our efforts to deliver exclusive and essential stories about criminal justice, local government, homelessness, education, equity and more.

This is an ideal position for an editor who wishes to dig deep into local news,beat coverage and story development, while guiding reporters in reporting and writing. This editor is a leader in our newsroom, helping to develop innovative strategies and ensure that The Bee’s local news coverage is unmatched in our competitive media landscape.

The anticipated base pay range for this position is between $105,000 and $130,000 annually.

In this role, you will need to:

  • Focus on audience first and always, with a commitment to tactics that grow readership.
  • Master engaging multimedia storytelling.
  • Demonstrate a command of audience analytics and knowledge of the tactics that deliver results.
  • Demonstrate speed, competitiveness and SEO savvy.
  • Work closely with reporters and collaborate with visual editors and our audience growth team.
  • Work well in a team environment.
  • Display strong interpersonal skills, including empathy and a superior ear for tone.

The successful candidate should meet the following requirements:

  • College degree or equivalent work experience.
  • Three years of editing experience.
  • Strong editing skills, excellent news judgment and a demonstrated ability to “see the story” that is going to matter to readers.
  • Unwavering commitment to accurate, ethical journalism.
  • Ability to work collaboratively to aggressively tackle stories.
  • Comfort with a job that will be demanding, fast-paced and constantly evolving.
