The Record-Journal seeks a versatile, bilingual editor to oversee our growing Latino Communities Reporting Lab. We launched the lab in March 2021 after conducting a 5-month listening tour in our community. Community listening provides the foundation of the lab.
We’re looking for someone with a passion for the lab’s mission – To amplify the voices of our local Latino communities, including to provide empowering, fact-based news, information and resources for our Latino communities; to shine a light on injustices and inequities to promote greater understanding and a more inclusive community for everyone; to showcase the successes and contributions of Latinos as a way of inspiring young people to expand what they consider possible.
The editor will oversee content creation with an emphasis on aligning news strategies to best serve the community using what we learned by listening to the community. The editor will also oversee a current grant-funded expansion of the lab. This includes hiring a new position, working with other departments to build long-term sustainability of the lab and identifying what news products would best serve the audience.
PURPOSE OF POSITION:
Plan, supervise and create news content for publication in print, online and social media for the growing Latino audience in central Connecticut. This position will assist the Latino Communities Reporting Lab to fulfill our mission of amplifying local Latino voices and be assigned duties related to fulfilling that mission with a strong emphasis on listening to the needs of the audience.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Supervise team of reporters.
- Plan, create and edit digital first and digital only content in English and Spanish for the Latino communities in our coverage area.
- Ability to interview all kinds of people and to do research.
- Process information and write it in a fair, accurate and compelling manner.
- Ability to capture photos and video and perform basic editing functions.
- Knowledge of current social media applications and trends, with the ability to post to house social media accounts in both English and Spanish.
- Oversee Latino Communities Reporting Lab Community Advisory Board.
- Prepare bilingual content for publication on the web and social media.
- Contribute to email newsletter, text messaging platform and stakeholder newsletter.
- Take an active role in audience-listening activities to continually ensure news strategies meet the needs of the audience.
- Perform other activities as necessary as the lab grows.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum educational requirement, Bachelor’s degree.
- Minimum 4-5 years reporting experience or equivalent experience, experience as a news editor preferred.
- Bilingual Spanish/English in both speaking and writing.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- Ability to conceive and execute enterprise reporting on highly specialized topics with authority.
- Ability to handle daily, short-term and long-term assignments simultaneously.
- Excellent communication skills, shows initiative, and exercises good news judgment.
- Multimedia and social media savvy with experience shooting/editing photos/videos.
- This position requires the ability to travel locally to gather newsworthy content. A valid driver’s license and vehicle are required; or, if no driver’s license, reliable and at-the-ready transportation.
