The Public is looking for writers

The Public is looking for writers to contribute to the Public Rights Project—an online mag exploring the legal and social underpinnings of justice—or lack thereof—in the US.

ABOUT THE COMPANY

The Public is an online magazine dedicated to exploring the legal and social underpinnings of justice — or lack thereof — here in America. We’re keenly invested in championing equity vis-a-vis the laws on the books that don’t get enforced.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • history pieces on the evolution of workers’ rights, labor organizing, and the like + why it impacts where we’re at today
  • current events coverage in/around the labor movement, civil rights litigation + news (Previous topics have included coverage on Dobbs, HB1, unionization + the gig economy)
  • photo-essays from the front-lines of labor
  • arts + culture (including books, films and theater) that explicitly dovetail with social justice
  • interviews with movers and shakers from the movement (organizers, academics, working people in the movement)
  • social theory pieces (the detrimental psychology of being “rated” on gig platforms, for example)

Perhaps most importantly, we’re here to serve as a platform for first-hand stories from underserved communities most affected when laws go unenforced. (We’re excited by personal essays if the “I” serves a larger societal dialogue and is supported by reporting.)

WHAT TO INCLUDE IN SUBMISSION

Send the following in an email to media@publicrightsproject.org:

  • Your first couple sentences — it’s really helpful to hear how you sound on the page.
  • Next, give us a couple sentences on what you want to write/report on, why it’s important (is there a riot? A new study? A story yet untold?), and who you’re going to talk to.
  • Tell us why you’re the right person to tell this story.
  • Got a couple clips to send? That’s great too. [optional]
  • Is your pitch timely? Please say so in the subject line of your email!

COMPENSATION

  •  Around ~$250 for 800-1500 words.
