The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette seeks a content reporter

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Western Pennsylvania’s largest newspaper and winner of the 2022 Keystone Media Awards’ top honor among the state’s largest newsrooms, is looking for a versatile reporter to join our award-winning Business news desk. We’re looking for a talented reporter and writer to cover a community that is home to a wide-range of large companies, from U.S. Steel to Dick’s Sporting Goods, from PPG and to American Eagle Outfitters. Our readers are smart, informed consumers of news who care deeply about investments and about saving money at the grocery store.

This reporting position would cover tech as a primary beat. Pittsburgh—which last year was ranked 13 th among the world’s emerging startup ecosystems by Startup Genome—is home to a dynamic and rapidly evolving tech scene that includes driverless car startups; universities including Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh that foster hi-tech development and business; companies such as Astrobotic, which spun out of CMU, makes lunar landers, and opened the Moonshot Museum on Pittsburgh’s North Side; and much more. Small business, retail, labor and manufacturing are also as possible sub-beats.

The role combines an ability to interpret financial reports and develop sources within industries while telling lively, impactful stories illustrating economic trends through people’s experiences. It requires keen attention to detail, strong editorial judgment and writing skills, and the ability to handle a fast-paced news environment. In short, we are looking for a reporter who finds, reports and writes stories that matter and stories that people want to read, not only for the business section but for A-1 as well. We will work to train great reporters in handling business stories.

Qualifications:

  • Ability to develop a wide range of sources on variety of business news subjects
  • A proven record to write timely, well-reported and thought-provoking stories
  • Eager to be part of a transforming newsroom working to provide deep coverage of a diverseand changing community
  • Ability to collaborate with the visuals team to provide all appropriate elements for stories (photos, videos and graphics); produces photos and video as needed
  • Able to juggle daily, short-term enterprise and long-term enterprise stories
  • Strong command of AP grammar and style
  • Strong copy-editing skills and the ability to produce content that is fair, accurate and thorough

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in journalism
  • 2 to 5 years of reporting experience preferred
  • Ability to use social media platforms (i.e. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat)
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills as well as strong interpersonal skills
  • Display exceptional work ethic, time management, and organizational skills

Qualified candidates should email Chris Togneri, business editor, at ctogneri@post-gazette.com
and include a resume, cover letter, and three samples of your work.
