The New York Times seeks an editor, headlines (temporary)

The New York Times Audio team is building on the success and journalism of “The Daily” to bring more of our newsroom reporting to our audience every day.

The Editor will be part of a team that uses the journalistic rigor and power of The Times’ unique reporting to deliver listeners both U.S. and global news stories of the day and the ideas driving them through a sound-rich audio experience. The editor must have a keen understanding of the news as well as sophisticated and sharp writing abilities. They should have experience with working within a newsroom setting and collaborating with reporters and editors. They should have an entrepreneurial spirit and an interest in experimenting with the usual conventions of audio news.

The editor will be responsible for shaping the ideas of each story from ideation through to line editing before the episode is filed, potentially including the final sign off at the end of production. The right candidate thrives in a deadline-driven daily news environment and has experience writing copy for audio as well as experience structuring and shaping non-narrated stories.


  • Able to quickly identify which stories in the news can build toward a larger idea.
  • Able to quickly identify which tape advances a story and the idea it is building toward.
  • Editing to ensure clarity of thought, logical sequencing of ideas, effective pacing and scoring.
  • Can coach reporters in studio, making sure to elicit the tape we need for the show.
  • Write and edit on tight deadlines.
  • Support the development of producers.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 5 + years experience in story editing in a news environment.
  • Sound news judgment.
  • Ability to communicate notes & feedback clearly and compassionately.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Eagerness to create the best work possible.
  • Belief in The New York Times’ mission and dedication to being a part of our innovation and growth.
  • Ability to uphold the existing editorial standards of The Times.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Expertise in audio news.
  • Experience with new initiatives and entrepreneurial ideas.
  • Knowledge across multiple disciplines, e.g., politics, business, science, etc.
  • Fluency in audio editing, ideally using Pro Tools.

The annual base pay range for this role is between $118,000.00 and $128,000.00.
