The New York Times seeks a visuals senior staff editor, Well

Well is looking for a creative and ambitious visual editor to produce outstanding service and enterprise journalism that will help Times readers live healthier lives. The Well desk offers coverage and guidance on a range of topics including mental and physical health, family and relationships. The Well report includes short visual stories and multimedia projects, so this role needs a versatile visual editor.

You should recognize visual opportunities, bring ideas to the table and work with reporters and editors to produce a variety of story formats, including small and large stories that can land in a day — or in a month. Journalistic judgment, visual creativity, innovative thinking and attention to detail are important aspects of this work. You’ll make frequent use of our CMS and adjacent tools. Candidates for this job should be comfortable with copy editing and photo editing, and they should have experience with video editing.

The responsibilities of this position would include:

  • Coordinate, conceptualize, edit small, medium, large-scale visual projects.
  • Collaborate with reporters and editors (including designers and video and photo editors) to shape ideas into visual story opportunities.
  • Execute multimedia storytelling, including storyboarding, basic writing, copy editing, photo editing and video editing.
  • Collaborating across desks, working with Graphics, Design, Video, Photo and Social Visuals on shared projects.
  • Maintain high journalistic standards for visual journalism on the desk.
  • Show strong editorial judgment, working with Times editors, standards and legal department for ethical and legal questions.

Basic Requirements:

  • 2+ years experience of multimedia editing experience, including copy, audio and photography.
  • 2 + years experience with video production, including Adobe Premiere and After Effects.
  • Strong visual judgment, sharp grasp of art direction and keen eye for use of illustration and setting an overall visual tone.
  • Demonstrated ability to create compelling stories that incorporate photography, video, text and audio.
  • Visual design competency — a grasp of typography, layout, color, motion, and behavior
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team
  • Ability to meet deadlines and to adapt to change in a daily, unpredictable news production environment.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule that may include nights and weekends.
  • Newsroom experience preferred

This position is represented by the NewsGuild of NY.

The annual base pay salary for this role is between $120,126.82 and $125,000.00.
