The New York Times seeks a video journalist: open-source reporter, Visual Investigations

The New York Times Visual Investigations team is at the forefront of accountability journalism and has been part of four Pulitzer Prizes in the last five years. We are looking for an exceptional open-source reporter with extensive writing and story-framing skills to seize news moments and dig aggressively into a wide range of national and international topics. The ideal candidate will have a strong track record conducting investigations, cultivating sources, mining documents, analyzing visuals, and uncovering new information. The role will focus on ambitious investigative and explanatory work primarily on competitive news stories but also on longer-term projects.

The right candidate is someone who can take initiative on a breaking news story, and develop exclusive angles. You should have the know-how to find and vet visual evidence, connect dots around chaotic events, and use your range of open-source skills to reveal new insights, provide clarity and hold power to account. Experience turning those findings into videos or video-driven text articles is valuable, working in conjunction with our video editors and motion-graphics producers.

Basic Requirements:

  • A strong ability to apply open-source research skills, including: sourcing audio-visual evidence from a variety of platforms; geolocation and chrono-location; satellite imagery analysis; video synchronization; and mapping out critical incidents using visuals
  • Proven ability to work on tight, demanding deadlines and in breaking news situations
  • A demonstrated aptitude for developing original angles around highly-competitive news events
  • 5+ years of experience as an open-source researcher, reporter or investigator at a top news outlet, NGO, or digital investigative organization

Preferred Requirements:

  • A portfolio with examples of video, interactive or visual executions
  • Familiarity with the video production process
  • The ability to identify story opportunities, develop reporting targets and frame material for investigative impact
  • Bilingual or Multilingual is a plus

Salary:  The annual base pay range for this role is between $104,684.83 and $118,000.00.
