The New York Times is looking for an experienced news photo editor to join our Digital News Desk team. You will help guide photographic coverage coming out of our breaking news operation, and will curate the desktop and mobile home screen presentations and our global briefing products.
You will work with the word editors from the Express and News desks and colleagues from photo, design, graphics and video. You will work productively, proactively and collegially with staff photographers, freelance photographers and fellow photo editors, and must be experienced and confident in working with wire services, agencies and all other sources of pictures and video, including social media and photographer estates.
In addition to driving the visual curation and presentation of The Times’ report of original assigned photography on multiple platforms, you will assign breaking news photography coverage and will be encouraged to pitch and create visual and multimedia enterprise stories.
We ask that you have great range, editorial judgment and journalistic integrity; an editor who can edit sharply for multiple platforms, produce complex photo assignments, perform thorough agency and social media research, and work quickly and effectively in a large newsroom setting. Early mornings, nights or weekends may be required.
You Will:
- Produce and build promotional visual assets for news stories and enterprise content with attention to detail in a fast-paced newsroom.
- Demonstrate strong editorial judgment, working with Times editors and legal department for all vetting, copyright and ethics questions.
- Maintain a very high level of photography assigning for news, narrative, investigative, feature and enterprise stories for all platforms including mobile and print.
- Demonstrate the ability to pitch, develop, edit, pace and build a powerful visual story, incorporating multimedia and the use of innovative storytelling tools.
- Work with reporters and editors to shape ideas into visual story opportunities.
- Focus on working with a diverse range of subjects and photographers, keeping our global and multigenerational audience in mind. Work to strengthen relationships with the photographers you are directing through briefings, regular contact and feedback.
- Work closely with supervisor and broader department, fostering productive, collegial and collaborative relationships with journalists throughout the newsroom.
Basic Qualifications:
- 5+ years experience in a newsroom photo editing role.
- An enthusiasm for visual journalism and current events, coupled with keen news judgment and ethics.
- Knowledge of web tools and programs, including content management systems, Photoshop, PhotoMechanic, video editing tools, FTP, and social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter.
- Good knowledge of responsive design and best practices for building stories for mobile devices.
- Can work occasional early mornings, nights or weekends.
- Shifts may be best suited for west coast hours.

The annual base pay salary for this role is between $109,521.19 and $112,000.00.
