The New York Times seeks a staff editor, opinion

February 16, 2023

The Opinion department has an opening for an ambitious editor to join the Special Projects team, which shapes and executes the department’s biggest collaborations. Some of our recent projects have focused on climate change, Covid deaths, mental health and fun. So yes, the subjects and story forms we produce vary wildly — from long-form pieces to immersive projects that span text, video, audio and graphics — but the constant is the first-class arguments that drive our journalism. We are looking for an editor who thinks flexibly and creatively, and can source challenging and fresh ideas and research from a diverse range of subject areas to shape into ambitious, new story forms.

This editor will need to be able to toggle between big-picture thinking and minute attention to detail in order to help conceive and execute these projects, and support senior editors’ efforts on the team. In addition to envisioning the projects, the special project team manages the workflow and oversees the process of making each project, so good organizational skills will be key in working with staff from across the Opinion department.

This position requires a minimum of five years of experience in journalism, and we’re especially interested in candidates who have deep experience in multimedia work (i.e. visual, video, audio or live).

Responsibilities:

  • Source and commission high-impact enterprise ideas from the Opinion staff and external collaborators
  • Participate in developing the creative vision for how best to tell these stories in collaboration with other Special Projects’ colleagues, design, photo, graphics, audio and video
  • Help manage workflow for ongoing projects
  • Edit pieces; write and edit display copy
  • Research and report for projects, where needed
  • Coordinate with the audience team to maximize reach and impact of the work

The annual base pay range for this role is between $105,000.00 and $110,000.00.
