The New York Times seeks a senior editor The Ezra Klein Show

Times Opinion is hiring a Senior Editor to play a key role in upholding and expanding the editorial approach and direction of The Ezra Klein Show.

The ideal candidate will have editing experience in the areas of politics, policy, philosophy, history, arts, culture and society. They will be intellectually omnivorous, excited to dive into the many realms the show draws guests from. They will understand the show as it exists now, and have a vision for where it could go next. This person should have a proven intuition for the zeitgeist and news moment. They should also be a structure master, with a keen sense for how to design and edit conversations in ways that draw guests out, and listeners in. They should be committed to a diversity of opinion and voices and topics, and excited to find new audiences for the show while deepening the relationship with existing listeners.

In this role, you’ll work with Ezra to set the editorial agenda of the show, and manage the production team in generating exciting, intriguing, and challenging story ideas. You’ll determine coverage areas that the show should lean into, and develop and execute concrete editorial plans to turn those topics into thoughtful, delightful, and surprising episodes. You should have excellent news judgment and experience in editing longform journalism or interviews. We are open to someone with or without experience in audio.

Responsibilities:

  • Work directly with the host to set the editorial and booking direction for The Ezra Klein Show, including themes and topics, newsmaking interviews, and conversations that help reframe the way we look at the world.
  • Edit episodes, including line edits and structural notes as needed, or reviewing producers’ work.
  • Manage a small team of producers to support their development and guide them through episode making, including editorial direction, narrative interview arcs, booking, interview prep, episode editing and pacing.
  • Coordinate with the audience team to maximize the reach and impact of the work.
  • Oversee regular editorial meetings.
  • Lead headline discussions and make final headline decisions.
  • Review fact-check and make final calls.
  • Give editorial feedback to producers on edits, headline-writing, show copy writing.
  • Train new producers on the show’s workflow and interview preparation process, which includes giving feedback and developing training materials.
  • Play an important role in defining and executing show strategy; establish and regularly measure progress to goals.
  • Continually assess and recalibrate the interviews we book, considering: topics covered; the range and diversity of guests; originality; and impact.
  • Work cross functionally with the Opinion desk and Ezra’s column editors to look for opportunities to collaborate.
  • Work closely and collaboratively with Audio leadership on larger goals per editorial, operations, staffing and audience growth.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 7+ years in a news environment.
  • 2+ years editing longform content, in audio or text or video.
  • Management experience.
  • Solid news judgment.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, deadlines and time-management.
  • Demonstrated success in booking and researching a wide variety of people from across industries, demographics and countries. ​

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in a newsroom.

The annual base pay range for this role is between $138,000.00 and $157,000.00.
