The New York Times is seeking a senior editor to lead the newsroom’s efforts to ambitiously and responsibly make use of generative artificial intelligence.
This editor will be responsible for ensuring that The Times is a leader in GenAI innovation and its applications for journalism. They will lead our efforts to use GenAI tools in reader-facing ways as well as internally in the newsroom. This leader will manage a small team of journalists and technologists who are prototyping new capabilities and running experiments across the newsroom. The most compelling approaches will require partnership with news desks and cross-functional product teams to take projects from the prototype phase to production. The editor’s primary focus will be on producing a steady stream of projects demonstrating high potential and responsible ways to incorporate GenAI tools into Times journalism and workflows.
They should make sure that The Times is staying abreast of the latest developments in the industry as technology evolves — and should constantly be on the lookout for new opportunities and vulnerabilities. They should recommend adjustments to our priorities and plans accordingly.
This leader will also help shape further guidelines for how GenAI is used by journalists throughout the newsroom, in partnership with the Standards department, taking into account the evolving nature of the technology and its risks.
