The New York Times seeks a domestic correspondent, Opinion

New York Times Opinion seeks a correspondent to report and write on a range of national defense and foreign policy issues, with a specific background covering nuclear policy, industry, weapons proliferation, and threats, both in the United States and abroad.

The successful candidate will have deep expertise in the biggest global questions, ideas and arguments, including on the war in Ukraine and its repercussions around the globe, shifting power dynamics in Asia, the future of authoritarianism, the post-War on Terror environment and great power competition with China and Russia. A perspective on U.S. national security issues is a must.

The writer should operate with an appreciation of general news, politics, business, culture, the environment and a wide array of other topics. The successful candidate will be adept at identifying emerging trends and write persuasively about them. The writer must be gifted at storytelling, as well as presenting well-reasoned arguments and insightful observations to help shape debate on important public issues. The writer will have a lively and curious voice and be willing to go beyond conventional wisdom.

As a member of Opinion’s International team, the writer may also be called upon to lend their expertise to and work closely with senior editorial leaders to help shape and commission Opinion’s coverage of global events. They will be open to experimenting with novel and multi-platform story forms and be willing to engage with readers when appropriate. The writer will also work in consultation with Opinion editors, in particular the Special Projects team, on the editing and fact-checking processes. The successful candidate should have an ability to juggle many projects at various levels of completion while adhering to deadlines.

The role reports to Times Opinion’s International Editor.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Substantial experience covering U.S. national security and foreign policy, and a track record of publishing highly ambitious journalism
  • Extensive background covering U.S. and international nuclear policy, industry, weapons proliferation, and threats, including a deep knowledge of the history of weapons development, testing, usage and potential future technology
  • An ability to regularly develop, pitch and help execute high-impact enterprise or narrative-driven pieces, including collaboration with multimedia teams, including design, photo, graphics, audio and video, on how to best tell these stories
  • Experience working simultaneously on long-term projects and tight news deadlines
  • Experience maintaining the highest standards for fact checking, accuracy and fairness, and working closely with the research team
  • Enthusiasm for coordinating with Opinion’s audience team to maximize the reach and impact of the work
  • Capacity to perform related work as assigned

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A highly developed network of sources on national security questions, including the most prominent people on this beat, the most important government and defense officials as well as up-and-coming voices on the biggest news and ideas
  • Experience traveling to and writing about nuclear hot spots, including Ukraine/Russia, the Korean Peninsula or the Middle East
  • Experience collaborating with multi-media reporting teams to develop and execute ambitious reporting projects

This is a Guild position.

 

The annual base pay range for this role is between $120,126.82 and $170,000.00.
