The National desk is seeking a senior staff editor to take on the critical role of day editor, a job that requires strength in all stages of the editing process, experience working both independently and collaboratively, calm under pressure, and the confidence to set priorities in a fast-paced breaking news environment. The most important quality: good judgment.

Working from the early hours in New York, the day editor plays a central role in shaping the National report, helping to identify and drive the most important stories of the day. The role requires a knack for spotting and elevating local news from across America for a broader audience, and a strong sense of what can make a powerful national story for The Times.

The day editor works with colleagues from across the newsroom on all aspects of a story as well as live coverage, including visuals, audience, alerts, and homepage and print display. This is a great job for someone who will thrive at the heart of one of The Times’s news desks.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Identifying daily coverage priorities for the desk and monitoring a wide range of sources for breaking news, national trends and potential storylines, avoiding holes in coverage and keeping us ahead of the competition.
  • Coordinating with other desk editors on assignments and deployment decisions, launching and running reporters or stringers as needed.
  • Helping to launch and run live coverage of breaking news, coordinating with Express, Live and other desks from across the newsroom.
  • Working with the National Director of News and others to plan advance coverage of major events, such as high-profile trials or funerals, hurricane and wildfire seasons, etc.
  • Handling both first and second edits on daily news and enterprise stories as needed.
  • Communicating coverage plans with other desks, warding off conflicts and identifying and facilitating opportunities for collaboration.
  • Staying current on new story formats and digital innovations in the newsroom, and providing or arranging training for other National staff as needed.
  • Helping with onboarding of new staff, acclimating them to the structures of the desk.
  • Identifying ways to improve or innovate, seeking always to facilitate and enhance the smooth functioning and efficiency of the desk.

The annual base pay range for this role is between $115,506.56 and $125,000.00.
