Join the 2024 New York Times fellowship as an audience producer of visual content in New York.
The Times is looking for an ambitious and creative candidate to join its visual teams as an audience producer fellow focused on creating off-platform content for X, Facebook, Instagram and more. As The Times continues to produce and showcase visual journalism at the forefront of our core products, we’re looking for someone to help bring our visual journalism to life on a variety of social media platforms.
The fellow will work on daily news and politics, features and series, and bigger enterprise and investigative projects to bring our journalism to off-platform audiences. Coordinating with journalists on our visual teams is an essential part of this work, and understanding our editorial priorities is crucial. This role includes experimenting with formats, focusing on speed during breaking news, building a regular publishing cadence and optimizing our workflows.
The ideal candidate should possess a strong sense of story, as well as have a good grasp of photojournalism, video journalism, graphics and art direction. The fellow will initiate and execute visual stories, including through photo and video editing and information design.
Candidates should be able to collaborate in a fast-paced environment, meet tight deadlines and juggle multiple projects. They also should be able to leverage tools to grow our off-platform presence and engage a younger, global audience. Evening and weekend work may be required.
Responsibilities:
- Work with audience producers to execute off-platform visual content; this would include breaking news, features, investigations and series
- Produce video clips and/or graphics for X, Facebook and/or Instagram during breaking news and live events
- Coordinate with social media editors to program social content
- Experiment with different forms of visual storytelling off-platform. Collaborate with visual editors to create social formats that align with the Graphics, Video, Photo and Design departments’ work
- Collaborate to create playbooks and visual style guides for new video-first formats
- Track off-platform data and work with audience editors to derive and share insights
Requirements:
- Two or more years of experience working in a visual storytelling role
- Two to three years of video editing and production experience
- Familiarity with Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and After Effects
- A deep understanding of X, Facebook and/or Instagram
- Ability to to use social reporting for breaking news or major coverage lines
- Ability to curate social channels (X and YouTube)
This program is for early-career journalists. Newsroom experience is preferred, but it is not required. Applicants with more than five years of full-time, professional journalism experience beyond school will not be considered. The most competitive candidates will be college graduates or postgraduates or career pivoters of any age who have had multiple news or visual internships, or equivalent experience.
