The New York Times offers fellowship – print editorial design

Join the 2024 New York Times Fellowship class as a print editorial designer in New York.

The Times is a recognized leader in print design and has been named World’s Best Designed Newspaper multiple times by the Society for News Design. The fellow will work with art directors and designers across news and feature sections to craft engaging layouts, reimagining digital-first content for a print audience.

Strong candidates will have portfolios that demonstrate a talent in narrative and visual storytelling using typography, photography, illustration and page architecture.

The fellow should be a creative problem-solver and quick learner with an interest in journalism across all subject matters. The successful candidate will be able to communicate and collaborate well with editors, photo editors and fellow designers.

This program is for early-career journalists. Applicants with more than five years of full-time, professional journalism experience beyond school will not be considered. The most competitive candidates will be college graduates or postgraduates or career pivoters of any age who have had multiple news internships or equivalent experience.

To apply, upload a résumé and cover letter, packaged in that order and uploaded as one single .pdf or .doc file that is under 5 MB in size. Visual candidates should also include a link to a portfolio of their work. The application will prompt candidates when to upload materials. The application also will ask candidates to provide a link to their portfolios. Applications that fail to include any of these materials or follow these instructions will not be considered.

Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States. We will not sponsor work visas for the fellowship, but we may consider you if you have an existing work visa or a valid student visa that can be extended via Optional Practical Training.

Applicants may apply to only one fellowship position per year. For instance, if you apply as a print editorial designer, you should not apply for any other positions in the fellowship. Duplicate applications will be discarded.

The deadline to submit an application is 5 p.m. Eastern Standard Time on Dec. 1. Our advice is to apply well before the deadline.

Keep in mind that the fellowships are very competitive and generate a high level of interest. We will not accept applications that are mailed or emailed to us. Nor will we acknowledge the status of every application upon receipt or during the vetting process, which can take eight weeks or more. We will contact you for interviews as needed.

This position is represented by the NewsGuild of NY.
