October 20, 2023

Posted by Mariam Ahmed

Join the 2024 New York Times Fellowship class as a photo editor in the Opinion section in New York.

The Opinion photo-editing fellow will help elevate and expand the visuals of the Opinion report. This fellowship is ideal for a creative visual journalist who is comfortable working in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment.

The fellow will work closely with photo editors to vet pitches from photographers, seek out opportunities to feature work by underrepresented and up-and-coming talent; work with the photo director to further sharpen the visual identity of the section; and reach out to potential contributors to bring in new talent. The fellow should be familiar with current trends in photography and photo illustration, including a photography history foundation, excellent news judgment, sharp editorial instinct, strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate with story editors and designers on a range of stories simultaneously.

The fellow should have an interest in research to aid in story development. The fellow will select, sequence and publish images for on- and off-platform use. The fellow also will conceptualize and assign photography, and will guide and direct staff and freelance photographers in the field.

This program is for early-career journalists. Applicants with more than five years of full-time, professional journalism experience beyond school will not be considered. The most competitive candidates will be college graduates or postgraduates or career pivoters of any age who have had multiple news internships or equivalent experience.

To apply, upload a résumé and cover letter, packaged in that order and uploaded as one single .pdf or .doc file that is under 5 MB in size. The application will prompt candidates when to upload materials. The application also will ask candidates to provide a link to their portfolios. Applications that fail to include any of these materials or follow these instructions will not be considered.

Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States. We will not sponsor work visas for the fellowship, but we may consider you if you have an existing work visa or a valid student visa that can be extended via Optional Practical Training.

Applicants may apply to only one fellowship position per year. For instance, if you apply as a photo editor, you should not apply for any other positions in the fellowship.

Duplicate résumés will be discarded.

The deadline to submit an application is 5 p.m. Eastern Standard Time on Dec. 1. Our advice is to apply well before the deadline.

Keep in mind that the fellowships are very competitive and generate a high level of interest. We won’t be able to accept applications that are mailed or emailed to us. Nor will we acknowledge the status of your application upon receipt. We will contact you for interviews as needed.

This position is represented by the NewsGuild of NY.
