Join the 2024 New York Times Fellowship class as an Opinion international editing fellow in New York.
The Opinion editing fellow will commission and edit opinion essays from outside contributors (journalists, experts and others) with a focus on international affairs and/or U.S. foreign policy.
Candidates should have a particular area or areas of global expertise or interest that they would like to focus on and develop during their fellowship. We are particularly interested in applicants with expertise in the Middle East, Latin America, Africa or Asia. They should have a sharp eye for detail; a strong sense of fresh arguments and good writing; superb research skills; a devotion to the highest standards of accuracy, precision and verification; the ability to dive into unfamiliar material on deadline; discretion in handling sensitive editorial material; and an interest in opinion journalism. A familiarity with trends in opinion writing among our competitors, an abiding interest in a wide range of subjects and solid news judgment are also critical.
This program is for early-career journalists. Applicants with more than five years of full-time, professional journalism experience beyond school will not be considered. The most competitive candidates will be college graduates or postgraduates or career pivoters of any age who have had multiple internships or equivalent experience in related fields.
To apply, upload a résumé, a memo and five samples of editing work, packaged in that order and uploaded as one single .pdf or .doc file that is under 5 MB in size. Include the full text of your clips, not just the links. The application will prompt candidates when to upload materials. In your résumé or cover letter, include an explanation of your role for any collaborative work samples that you highlight. Applications that fail to include any of these materials or follow these instructions will not be considered.
Your memo should explain what themes and part/parts of the world you would like to explore as a commissioning editor and what writers (or kinds of writers) you would commission to write. At the end of the fellowship year, the fellow will have built a portfolio of work that they have commissioned on an issue of critical international importance.
Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States. We will not sponsor work visas for the fellowship, but we may consider you if you have an existing work visa or a valid student visa that can be extended via Optional Practical Training.
Applicants may apply to only one fellowship position per year. For instance, if you apply as an Opinion international editing fellow, you should not apply for any other positions in the fellowship. Duplicate applications will be discarded.
The deadline to submit an application is 5 p.m. Eastern Standard Time on Dec. 1. Our advice is to apply well before the deadline.
Keep in mind that the fellowships are very competitive and generate a high level of interest. We will not accept applications that are mailed or emailed to us. Nor will we acknowledge the status of every application upon receipt or during the vetting process, which can take eight weeks or more. We will contact you for interviews as needed.
