The New York Times offers fellowship – graphics

October 19, 2023

Join the 2024 New York Times Fellowship class as a graphics editor in either the newsroom or our Opinion section, both in New York.

The newsroom graphics fellow will work with graphics editors and department leaders to develop skills and judgment as reporters and shapers of visual stories. As part of daily news coverage or enterprise projects, fellows will report, write, edit, design and produce interactive graphics and multimedia across all Times platforms.

The newsroom graphics desk covers all subjects. Strong candidates will be curious about anything and everything, coming to the newsroom with lots of ideas and with great enthusiasm for potential lines of reporting.

The Opinion graphics fellow will create pieces of visual opinion journalism using data visualization, data analysis, programming, vector art and other digital tools. The fellow will collaborate across the Opinion section and with guest essayists to provide visual evidence for the arguments and debates that shape our world. A portfolio demonstrating experience with news graphics or interactive visualizations is necessary.

Opinion graphics candidates should have a sharp eye for detail, a nose for fresh arguments and fine writing, solid research skills, a commitment to the highest standards of accuracy, the ability to dive into unfamiliar material on deadline and discretion in handling sensitive subjects. Successful applications will demonstrate skillfulness with at least a few graphics tools, like Illustrator, D3.js, R, JavaScript, Python, HTML/CSS, GIS or After Effects.

This program is for early-career journalists. Applicants with more than five years of full-time, professional journalism experience beyond school will not be considered. The most competitive candidates will be college graduates or postgraduates or career pivoters of any age who are interested in data visualization, cartography or other forms of visual journalism; have already developed skills to start producing work in these areas; and have had previous news or visuals internships, or equivalent experience.

To apply, upload a résumé and cover letter, packaged in that order and uploaded as one single .pdf or .doc file that is under 5 MB in size. Visual candidates should also include a link to a portfolio of their work. The application will prompt candidates when to upload materials. The application also will ask candidates to provide a link to their portfolios. Applications that fail to include any of these materials or follow these instructions will not be considered.

Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States. We will not sponsor work visas for the fellowship, but we may consider you if you have an existing work visa or a valid student visa that can be extended via Optional Practical Training.

Applicants may apply to only one fellowship position per year. For instance, if you apply as a graphics editor, you should not apply for any other positions in the fellowship. Duplicate applications will be discarded.

The deadline to submit an application is 5 p.m. Eastern Standard Time on Dec. 1. Our advice is to apply well before the deadline.

Keep in mind that the fellowships are very competitive and generate a high level of interest. We will not accept applications that are mailed or emailed to us. Nor will we acknowledge the status of every application upon receipt or during the vetting process, which can take eight weeks or more. We will contact you for interviews as needed.

This position is represented by the NewsGuild of NY.
