The New York Times offers fellowship – Audience

Join the 2024 New York Times Fellowship class as a member of the Audience team in New York.

The Audience fellow will spend the year getting a comprehensive understanding of how The Times approaches off- and on-platform audience development and engagement. The year will be divided into rotations with the four departments that make up the Audience team.

Rotation 1: Data and audience insights. Working with our deputy audience editor in charge of data and and the newsroom’s partners in data analytics, the fellow will begin the year with a baseline understanding of our audience — whom we reach and whom we need to engage. The fellow will also learn basic data-literacy skills and work to help desks optimize coverage.

Rotation 2: Search. Working with search editors, the fellow will learn how we track trends, shape live coverage on breaking storylines, and optimize headlines and links.

Rotation 3: Community. Working with Community editors, the fellow will learn how to engage Times readers through comments.

Rotation 4: Social. This rotation will develop the fellow’s social strategy, framing, copy and news judgment skills.

This program is for early-career journalists. Applicants with more than five years of full-time, professional journalism experience beyond school will not be considered. The most competitive candidates will be college graduates or postgraduates or career pivoters of any age who have had multiple internships or equivalent experience in related fields.

To apply, upload a résumé and cover letter, packaged in that order and uploaded as one single .pdf or .doc file that is under 5 MB in size. The application will prompt candidates when to upload materials. Applications that fail to include any of these materials or follow these instructions will not be considered.

Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States. We will not sponsor work visas for the fellowship, but we may consider you if you have an existing work visa or a valid student visa that can be extended via Optional Practical Training.

Applicants may apply to only one fellowship position per year. For instance, if you apply as an audience fellow, you should not apply for any other positions in the fellowship. Duplicate applications will be discarded.

The deadline to submit an application is 5 p.m. Eastern Standard Time on Dec. 1. Our advice is to apply well before the deadline.

Keep in mind that the fellowships are very competitive and generate a high level of interest. We will not accept applications that are mailed or emailed to us. Nor will we acknowledge the status of every application upon receipt or during the vetting process, which can take eight weeks or more. We will contact you for interviews as needed.

This position is represented by the NewsGuild of NY.
