The Messenger seeks a markets & economics editor, business

The Messenger is looking for an experienced editor to run the Markets & Economics team. You will be equally adept at editing breaking news and longer enterprise stories. You will help both young and seasoned reporters develop sources and get scoops. You will be able to guide reporters in the art of combing through company press releases, SEC filings, and court documents to see beyond the spin and find the news. You will have an intimate knowledge of the markets, economics, and covering company earnings.

  • Assigning and editing engaging, accurate, informative, and swiftly delivered business news stories in a sometimes high-volume, fast-paced environment
  • Writing headlines with an eye toward SEO
  • Cutting through the spin in company press releases
  • Finding news in SEC filings and court documents
  • Developing high-impact story ideas and working closely with reporters/writers to execute them
  • Guiding the team in spotting trends in the latest market gyrations, interpreting changes in economic indicators for a consumer audience, cutting through the spin of company press releases and SEC filings
  • Working closely with editors across teams and departments to get ahead of the news, creatively expanding on existing stories, and maintaining a prescient editorial calendar
  • Building a cohesive team that you guide and educate with compassion, fairness, and equality
  • Improving every piece of copy that you touch
  • Collaborating with other departments, such as design and development, to ensure that all content is visually appealing, user-friendly, and optimized for SEO, social media, and different platforms

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • A minimum of 10 years of experience covering or editing markets or economics news
  • Proven track record of breaking news and filing or editing stories in a fast-paced, real-time news environment
  • Strong news judgment and the ability to identify stories and trends relevant to The Messenger’s wide-ranging audience
  • Impeccable editing and writing skills
  • A hunger to deliver straight-up, unvarnished news presented clearly, concisely, and honestly.
  • The stamina to work in a fast-paced environment and meet tight deadlines
  • The drive to make every story engage readers with smart, fluid writing and attention-getting presentation
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of AP style and other editorial guidelines
  • Familiarity with different content management systems and editorial tools
  • Ability to work collaboratively across the platform
  • Ability to deliver accurate news in a high-volume, deadline-oriented environment
  • Must be highly motivated, extremely organized, detail-oriented, and possess outstanding communication and coordination skills

Desired Characteristics:

  • Bachelor’s degree or masters in journalism, economics, or a relevant discipline
  • Experience at a major online news site, daily financial publication, or large daily newspaper
  • A passionate for digital storytelling and creating the best reader experience online
  • Ongoing knowledge of and interest in the business world and financial news
