The Messenger seeks a managing editor of audience editorial, audience development

We are currently seeking a Managing Editor of Audience Editorial to join our innovative team. This individual will lead our assignment editors and reporter/curators in our audience team. They will oversee the team’s operations, fostering an environment that encourages growth and continual learning. This role requires an individual who is dedicated to audience growth and understands how to harness editorial content to meet these goals. It is critical that this individual has experience in a fast-paced breaking newsroom and is an organized and calm under deadline pressure. We expect this editor to constantly update story priority, ensure the timeliness of files, and provide feedback to ensure the team turns around stories quickly, accurately, and in an engaging manner.

Hours and Location:

This is a fully remote position, although hybrid options are available for candidates based near our offices in New York or D.C.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the Audience Editorial team, overseeing the work of assignment editors and reporter/curators, scheduling staff, and conducting performance evaluations
  • Drive and lead more reporting, production, execution and distribution of audience-focused journalism projects
  • Oversee and coordinate with the Breaking News team to ensure timely coverage of unfolding events.
  • Oversee our short-term analytics, including sharing insights from across platforms to inform daily decisions
  • Develop training plans to help audience editorial staff approach their work through an audience lens
  • Conduct weekly team meetings to facilitate communication, address concerns, and stimulate the exchange of innovative ideas.
  • Work collaboratively with other departments to ensure that all content is aligned with our audience growth objectives.
  • Develop and implement editorial guidelines and standards.
  • Ensure the production of high-quality, accurate, and engaging content.
  • Monitor news trends and audience behaviors to guide the content strategy.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with key sources and contributors.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in an editorial role, with at least 2 years in a leadership capacity within a newsroom.
  • Proven track record of audience growth and engagement.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills, with a deep understanding of AP style and other editorial guidelines.
  • Familiarity with various CMS and editorial tools.
  • Exceptional ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment and meet tight deadlines.
  • Experience with data-driven decision-making and audience analytics.
  • A collaborative mindset and ability to work with cross-functional teams.

**Salary Range: $120,000/yr – $150,000/yr**
