The Messenger is looking for an editor to run the Breaking News team for its Science & Technology section. The ideal candidate has a strong background in science or tech reporting, and must have experience identifying, assigning and editing live news as it breaks; they are focused on speed and accuracy, and not afraid to turn around a large quantity of copy every day. They know where to look to find what’s new and trending before anyone else has the story. This editor will lead a team of early career reporters, and will help them learn the tools of the trade. It’s an ideal position for an experienced journalist who wants to be a mentor and a teacher in a fast-paced newsroom environment.
Responsibilities:
- Finding vital breaking news and trending stories, and working with reporters to develop stories
- Assigning and editing engaging, accurate and swiftly delivered news in a high-volume, fast-paced environment
- Monitoring competing news sites, wires, and social media for the stories that matter to our readers
- Cutting through the spin in company press releases
- Ensuring that all content is optimized for SEO and social media
- Coordinating across teams to determine which stories need to be handed off to beat reporters so they can be built out fully
- Managing a team of rookie reporters, helping them develop future beats, and teaching them to become world-class journalists
Requirements:
- A minimum of 7 years of experience covering or editing news at a real-time news outlet
- Proven track record of filing or editing news in a fast-paced environment
- Experience as a beat reporter covering science and/or technology stories
- Ability to work a flexible schedule if there’s a big breaking story out of normal work hours
- Strong news judgment and the ability to identify relevant stories and trends
- Familiarity with SEO and social media best practices.
- A high level of motivation, organization and outstanding communication skills
