The Markup seeks news editor

The Markup is looking for a news editor who will oversee a team of reporters and freelancers who will persistently monitor and uncover the ways in which tech affects people.

They will produce well-reported, creatively told short- and medium-term enterprise stories, accountability stories, graphics and explainers that will be published at least twice a week on the website.

DUTIES:

  • Edit and structure articles in ways that are most friendly to readers
  • Coach reporters and freelancers on The Markup’s approach to explanatory journalism
  • Maintain editorial tone, style, and standards for The Markup’s articles
  • Work closely with internal and external counsel on story review, with the copy editor to finalize stories, with the graphics editor to conceptualize and approve art for stories, with the audience engagement editor to approve social copy and with the editor-in-chief to develop processes for pitching, approving, developing, scheduling, and vetting stories

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Has five years’ experience editing copy on a deadline and is committed to accuracy above all else
  • Respects readers time by producing clean, readable articles
  • Experience upholding newsroom editorial standards
  • Has worked as a reporter and can coach reporters on source cultivation, interviewing techniques etc
  • Works well with others
