The Los Angeles Times has an opening for an assistant editor in Metro. This editor will work both with general assignment reporters and beat reporters on a range of topics.
Job Description:
The successful candidate should have an eagerness to work with reporters on a wide variety of stories. A passion for producing high-quality journalism about Los Angeles and California – and reflecting the diversity and complexity of these areas in our coverage – is also a must.
This editor will handle a mix of breaking news, features and longer-term reporting, backing up other editors while also building relationships with individual reporters. Responsibilities will range from anchoring major breaking news stories and running days-long coverage on major stories to editing Column Ones and developing project and series ideas. This position will work closely with the city editor and the Fast Break Desk for breaking news. Editing experience is a plus.
Responsibilities:
- Plan, assign and edit coverage for dailies and in advance
- Collaborate with editorial staff, including photo, design and copy desks, to produce stories on all platforms; ensure production processes are followed and deadlines are met
- Use designated tools to clearly communicate editorial coverage plans in a clear and timely manner
- Provide guidance to staff on conceptualizing, reporting and writing content to ensure quality, accuracy and fairness
- Stay current on major developments, with special attention to how California might be affected
- Adhere to the company’s editorial ethics policies and guidelines and other company policies regarding employee conduct, including where applicable the collective bargaining agreement
- Undertake the responsibilities of the role using the tools, software or technologies that may be available or required at the time
- Other duties as assigned
Requirements:
- A minimum of seven years of journalism experience
- Strong writing and re-writing skills
- A portfolio that exhibits a history of strong story conceptualization and execution
- Ability to elevate copy for a sophisticated readership
- Ability to edit with attention to accuracy, grammar and style
- Demonstrated knowledge of journalism ethics and legal standards
- Excellent communication, planning and organizational skills
- Prior experience with publishing tools and software including content management systems
- Ability to multitask and complete work under sometimes intense deadline pressure
- An understanding of audience data and analytics and a track record of using data to make informed decisions on coverage
The pay scale for this position is $101,421 to $128,000.
