The Logic’s editing and production desk helps ensure our journalism is accurate, readable and well-presented. Desk editors work on our stories and newsletters from start to finish, including editing, fact checking, packaging, production and promotion to readers.
The ideal candidate for assistant editor will have strong editorial judgment, excellent copy editing, fact checking and writing skills, as well as experience working in a news environment. They will take as much pride in contributing to our daily newsletter as they do in helping edit news stories and features. And they will be committed to building a collegial, collaborative, goal-oriented newsroom that treats all its members with respect.
This is a full-time staff job with an annual salary range of $58,902.30 to $78,536.40. Candidates should be able to work shifts ending as late as 7 p.m. ET. You can be based in Toronto, where The Logic offers a hybrid work arrangement, or elsewhere in Canada.
What you’ll do:
- Copy edit and fact check The Logic’s editorial content
- Select photos, build charts and create other simple visuals
- Package and publish The Logic’s editorial output, including newsletters
- Work alongside the audience and editorial teams to amplify The Logic’s journalism
- Participate in editorial meetings and other meetings as required
- Assist with managing The Logic’s editorial tips and feedback inboxes
- Other editorial and production duties as assigned
- You have a passion for great journalism and a track record of producing it
- You have experience editing news stories at a high standard on deadline
- You have exceptional fact-checking, copy-editing and proofreading skills, and experience with Canadian Press Style
- You’re comfortable working with stories based on financial statements, data and charts
- You have experience working with WordPress, Mailchimp and/or other content management systems
- You have excellent time-management and multi-tasking skills
- You’re detail-oriented with the ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines
- You’re organized, focused and able to work both independently and collaboratively
- You have an adaptive and entrepreneurial mindset
- You’re a team player who wants to grow with the organization and who will enjoy working at a startup
