The Journal Gazette, the largest news-gathering organization in northeast Indiana, is ready to hire an energetic reporter with the ability to identify daily and in-depth stories, with an emphasis on growth and development. The successful candidate to join our Fort Wayne-based team will be an individual who also knows the value of promoting content online, including through social media, and will help our newsroom departments push our work that way. The ideal candidate will have excellent time-management skills and work well under deadline pressure.

The person who fills this job would be expected to:

  • Develop rapport with a variety of sources on a range of story topics.
  • Exercise good news judgment, breaking stories outside of news releases
  • Be productive and still fair and accurate in reporting
  • Be willing to accept coaching and constructive feedback
  • Write compelling daily and enterprise stories that inform and engage readers.
  • Be a team player who can work well with other reporters, editors and others on staff, including others in our newsroom who work with online/social media initiatives
  • Help grow our audience through promoting content on social media
  • Show interest and commitment to professional growth and career development
  • Show maturity and adapt to changes required in the evolving media landscape

Preferred candidates will have a bachelor’s degree in journalism or a related field and at least two years of daily newspaper reporting experience.

Knowledge about SEO and other related online operations and opportunities is a plus.

The reporting beat part of this position includes covering some local zoning and planning commissions with an eye toward news developments, but also big-picture stories about where local government and businesses are investing. This reporter will also take the lead on local and regional public health and environmental stories.

If interested, send a resume, three job references with their phone number and email, a cover letter and six clips published in the past 12 months to Managing Editor Lisa Green at lisagreen@jg.net.

The deadline is 5 p.m. Wednesday, April 5.
