Google has never been more powerful — or more embattled. It overcame a slow start to the AI boom to become one of its biggest beneficiaries, with rapid growth across core businesses and a valuation second only to Nvidia. Now it’s racing to compete on AI models and applications, managing fraught relationships with companies including Anthropic, reshaping consumer media through YouTube, and betting tens of billions on hardware and data centers in a transformation that is remaking the company from the ground up. Meanwhile, Waymo is quietly trying to revolutionize transportation.
