The Information seeks a China tech reporter

The Information is looking for an ambitious reporter to join our team covering China’s vibrant and tumultuous startup and venture capital scene, which is second only to the U.S. in terms of size, scope and ambition.

This person would be joining a reporting group that has broken some of the biggest tech stories, including discussions to sell TikTok and later the Chinese government’s stake in its owner, ByteDance, the fierce rivalry between Sequoia China and Hillhouse, and Apple’s secret $275 billion deal with the Chinese government.

The ideal candidate would work with our team to identify the next Tencent, Alibaba or ByteDance before it hits the mainstream, and to uncover emerging trends before venture capitalists have sniffed them out. This person would also help unravel how China’s changing regulations, and the forces trying to separate China from the U.S., could impact the flow of capital, talent and ideas between the countries.

On this beat, the candidate will: break news on major deals, write revealing profiles on the most important innovators, and peel back the veneer to show the rivalriesambitions and personalities driving the sector. They’ll also dive deep into the financial metrics to reveal how startups are succeeding or failing.
