The Independent seeks a senior audience editor

The Independent is looking for a dynamic and experienced senior audience editor to grow its global reach and help lead changes in editorial strategy and workflow.

The right candidate will have a deep understanding of how to achieve growth and scale and it is vitally important the person for this job understands the nuances of the US market

You will be expected to be comfortable presenting strategy to shareholders and senior management in an articulate and engaging manner, both in person and in report form. The right person will be a decisive problem solver, with the ability and attitude to influence colleagues into positive and timely action.

Candidates with newsroom experience are preferred, but those with an exceptional understanding of audience analysis across multiple platforms from other sectors will be considered.

Responsibilities:

  • Inspire and help lead a team of six audience editors
  • Advise on publishing strategy and help lead on implementing change
  • Complete understanding of all analytics platforms used to track the Independent and use them to map strategy and spot issues
  • Monitor news and wires constantly for traffic opportunities
  • Recraft headlines to make content pop on and off platform
  • Help inform journalistic decisions with audience best practice in mind
  • Help to implement social media strategy across all platforms
  • Post to social media – Facebook, Twitter and Instagram primarily
  • This role will be hybrid remote, spending 2-3 days per week in our office in Manhattan

Qualifications:

  • The right candidate will have a deep understanding of how to achieve growth and scale and it is vitally important the person for this job understands the nuances of the US market
  • Strong familiarity with The Independent and our coverage
  • Proven track record for increasing followers, engagement and traffic on social media or growth through SEO
  • Excellent organisational and planning skills required to manage the daily/weekly/monthly publishing flow of an editorial team
  • Ability to collaborate with editors to grow and increase audience, both on site and across platforms
  • Ability to analyze complex issues and developing actionable insights and plans — using data from proprietary platform analytics (e.g. Facebook) and or third-party aggregate sources (e.g., CrowdTangle)
  • Experience using reporting and analytics tools (Omniture, Chartbeat) or willingness to learn
  • Skilled content creator
  • Expert knowledge of trends and tools for social media platforms
  • Experience of working in a dynamic fast-paced media environment
  • Quality Service — Delivers high quality and efficient service and takes account of the diverse customer needs and requirements when looking at ways to improve service quality
  • Applicants will need to be legally eligible to live and work in the US
