The Houston Chronicle has an immediate opening for an ambitious, versatile journalist to work in a fast-paced newsroom on the biggest stories affecting the Houston metro area and Texas. The data reporter will join the data visualization team that focuses on quick-turn, graphics-focused stories, interactive projects and data-driven deep dives.
The successful candidate will work quickly but responsibly on data stories that help readers understand and explore their communities through unique reporting, data analysis and interactive graphics creation.
We’re seeking a self-starter with high standards who can collaborate well, has excellent communication skills, and is comfortable providing and taking feedback. We want a teammate who aspires to be a key player in an exciting, modern news operation that values a smart, local readership and aims to take risks in how we report and present journalism online.
What the data reporter will do:
● Report and write graphics- and data-driven articles for HoustonChronicle.com.
● Conceive story ideas and work with editors and developers to enhance our storytelling.
● Collaborate with newsroom reporters to produce unique, high-impact journalism.
● Create assets to help promote and distribute the team’s work.
● Support and further data literacy in the newsroom by leading data trainings.
What it will take to be successful:
● Experience in a modern newsroom or a related work environment.
● Strong news judgment, creativity and meticulousness.
● A dedication to organization and documentation.
● Desire and ability to learn on the job.
● Ability to report stories and write and build quickly while keeping the strictest commitment to fairness and accuracy.
● Ability to work with multiple, large datasets, preferably using Python, R or similar coding languages.
● Knowledge of current multimedia storytelling and desire to experiment with new ways of engaging readers.
● Ability to collaborate with all newsroom teams and work in a fast-changing news environment.
● Plus: Web development or data visualization experience.
● Plus: Mapping or GIS skills.
Requirements:
● This position is full-time.
● It will likely include some weekend and holiday work.
● The successful candidate must be based in Houston or willing to move to the area.
