The Gazette (Clarity Media Group) seeks a public safety reporter

Colorado’s largest news organization – Clarity Media Group — is seeking a talented and tenacious multimedia reporter to join its public safety team in Colorado Springs. The Gazette is a two-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize and has multiple digital and print products. Versatility is the key attribute for the successful candidate. We’re looking for top-notch enterprise and deep dives from this reporter along with the ability to go live from the scene with our breaking news journalists. Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Break news on a competitive beat. Quickly, clearly and accurately report breaking news as it happens.
  • Build a range of public safety and criminal justice sources throughout the region.
  • Collaborate and maintain strong working relationship with other Clarity Media staff to assure growth of audiences and to increase loyalty and improve engagement.
  • Develop and maintain good relations with the local community.
  • Convey news and tell stories using multiple tools—including writing, social media, photos and video. Podcasting experience a plus.
  • Write analytically for readers looking for a deeper dive into public safety and criminal justice issues.
  • Spot local trends in public safety and criminal justice. Take national topics and relate them on local level. Offer story ideas but also take assignments.
  • Collaborate with editors, reporters, visual journalists, producers and designers.
  • Be present on social media. Use it as a tool to build audience, extend the brand and to post breaking news.
  • Stay abreast of all major news in the region, particularly related to your beat.
  • Produce strong features, enterprise and behind-the-scenes reports.
  • Use rich media to enhance storytelling to engage readers.
  • Job will require a range of hours, including nights, weekends.
  • Fill assignment shifts and other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education & Work Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Minimum of 2 years of professional news experience preferred.
