The Frederick News-Post, a six-day-a-week newspaper in Frederick, Maryland, is seeking an experienced reporter to cover three topics woven into one beat (with plenty of overlap) — health, the environment and Fort Detrick.
The reporter on this beat did a lot of COVID-19 reporting during the pandemic, but numerous other health-related topics will keep you busy now.
An environment / health topic we’ve covered extensively lately is the presence of “forever chemicals” in local water supplies. We want to keep that going.
Another important part of the beat is covering Fort Detrick, a U.S. Army installation. Fort Detrick is the home of the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases, the Federal National Laboratory for Cancer Research and much more, particularly related to biomedical technology. If you’re excited by the prospect of covering tons of possible news angles at Fort Detrick, we want to hear from you, especially if you bring expertise to the beat.
Qualified candidates will have at least two to three years of reporting experience. They will be self-starters, highly motivated and curious enough to find story ideas. They’ll work with a collaborative spirit under daily deadline pressures. Must be internet/social media savvy and able to occasionally shoot photos. The ability to make (or learn to make) data visualization graphics is a plus.
A bachelor’s degree, preferably in journalism, English, or a related program, is preferred. Must have excellent grammar skills and knowledge of AP style.
Must have a car/truck. Must possess a valid driver’s license and furnish current driving record with no more than two points for a period of two years, and an acceptable driving history with no suspensions.
The normal schedule is Monday to Friday, with some night shifts and a weekend and holiday rotation.
