The Deal seeks reporter to cover retail, consumer goods and food and beverage

The Deal is looking for an enterprising reporter to cover the retail, consumer, food and beverage industries to work within a team of reporters based in our New York office and part of a team of more than two dozen journalists world-wide. The ideal applicant has basic knowledge of the financial markets and the key players in the consumer/retail industry. Reporters are expected to produce a mix of daily news and feature stories and show the ability to develop sources for future breaking news. This reporter will cover a wide range of companies from consumer staples and cosmetics to casinos and gaming. This role will report to a senior editor and work closely with colleagues in activist investing, private equity and restructuring.

Responsibilities

  • Coverage includes private equity, corporate and middle market M&A as well activist investing and restructuring.
  • Focused on exclusive, analytical or idea generative content with industry focus.
  • Writes 1-2 stories per day (mix of features, enterprise and daily stories) to be published to The Deal’s premium subscription website.
  • Opportunities for multimedia appearances and on-camera work in video, podcasts, webcasts and conferences.
  • Reporters will have the opportunity for domestic and international travel to attend Deal-branded and other industry conferences.

Experience

  • Basic knowledge of financial markets and terminology
  • Demonstrate ability to break news and analyze situations on the fly
  • Excellent communication skills, both on the phone and in-person
  • Be confident working to strict deadlines
  • Willingness to make calls and attend meetings for source development
  • On-camera or on-air experience
  • Industry experience a plus, but not required
