The Capital Times seeks a Wisconsin politics & government reporter

The Capital Times, a digital-first newsroom in Madison, Wisconsin, is seeking an experienced politics and government reporter who loves finding and telling high-impact, hard news stories no one else is covering. This is a reporter who knows how government works, when it doesn’t, and how to build source networks and obtain public documents that reveal the inner workings and outcomes of policymaking.

  • This reporter would be part of a two-person state Capitol team covering government and politics in one of the nation’s most closely watched swing states.
  • The right candidate for this position will have demonstrated success producing not just well-sourced and balanced daily breaking news but also exclusive deeper dives and investigative journalism.
  • This journalist will often collaborate with other beat reporters to help elevate our coverage of high-impact issues, so teamwork skills are a must.
  • The reporter also will work with editors to identify stories and topics that get us out of the Capitol bubble and carve a distinctive Cap Times “lane” in state politics and government coverage, including a reader-centric approach to elections.
  • Our newsroom has a commitment to reach and cover under-heard and underserved members of our community, and we are seeking someone who will find such stories challenging and valuable.
  • Three to five years of professional experience in a daily news operation is required.
  • A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in journalism or a related field is required.
  • Bilingual skills and cross-cultural competence, or experience in a marginalized community, are ideal.
