The BVI Beacon is a small national newspaper in the British Virgin Islands that routinely punches above its weight. Our work ranges from award-winning cross-border investigations to in-depth narrative journalism to hyper-local breaking news and features. Besides our weekly print newspaper, we are expanding our multimedia offerings via our website and social media channels.
The positions:
The Beacon is seeking to hire one general assignment reporter and one reporter/editor to lead our weekly business section.
In general, our reporters’ day-to-day work tends to reflect the diversity of our coverage. On any given day, they might interview the premier about the United Kingdom’s recent threat to suspend the BVI Constitution after a damning inquiry; report on our former premier’s upcoming cocaine trial in Miami; cover the new government’s work in the legislature; use Zoom to collaborate with colleagues around the region on a climate change investigation; or photograph a Girl Scouts fundraiser for an audio slideshow, just to name a few.
Other topics in the news here recently include the ongoing recovery from Hurricane Irma in 2017; the government’s plan to chip away at offshore secrecy by launching a public company register soon; the tourism industry’s recovery from Covid-19, and much more. All our reporters are encouraged to work on our in-depth special reports.
There is plenty of sailing and surfing here, of course, but these are not jobs for sailors or surfers looking to write on the side. Rather, they’re jobs for serious, conscientious journalists who are as comfortable researching a months-long investigation as they are writing a colourful feature about this small but diverse community of about 33,000 people.
Experience and skills:
To apply:
Rush a cover letter, a resumé and five clips that showcase your most in-depth reporting to bvibeaconjobs@gmail.com. The application process is competitive, and applicants who make it through the first round may be asked to complete a writing test. We apologise that we are unable to respond to all unsuccessful candidates.
