The Baltimore Banner seeks a housing reporter

The Baltimore Banner is seeking a skilled and dedicated reporter to cover housing issues in the Baltimore area.

Responsibilities:

  • As the housing reporter, you will be responsible for breaking news stories while consistently delivering impactful enterprise and accountability pieces
  • Your coverage will encompass various topics such as evictions, affordable housing shortage, substandard conditions, vacant properties, tenant experiences, and the state of public housing
  • You will establish and nurture sources, breaking news in both the city of Baltimore and the suburbs, while also tracking national trends and finding opportunities to localize them
  • Collaboration is a key aspect of this role, as you will work closely with The Banner’s news partners and be comfortable making appearances on radio and TV
  • We value data-driven journalism, and you will collaborate with data journalists to produce stories that have a significant impact
  • Break news stories related to the housing beat
  • Produce compelling enterprise stories that highlight issues, trends, and hold public officials accountable
  • Collaborate with The Banner’s engagement and data teams to engage the audience and distribute content across all platforms
  • Work in coordination with other Baltimore Banner editors, reporters, and staff to cover housing intersecting with other topics

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of five years of experience in journalism
  • Strong writing skills and the ability to present complex topics in an understandable manner
  • Excellent news judgment and fact-checking skills
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
  • Passion for news and content that resonates with readers
  • Strong teamwork and collaboration skills
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills
  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends as dictated by news demands
  • Excellent planning, organizational, and time management abilities
  • Familiarity with metrics, social media, and SEO to drive audience growth and digital subscriptions
  • Commitment to upholding journalistic values and ethics

Salary as estimated by Indeed is $35,000 to $81,000 per year
