The Bakersfield Californian seeks a news reporter

The Bakersfield Californian, an award-winning newspaper and website in California’s Central Valley, has an opening for a news reporter who will chiefly report on crime, courts, and public safety. The reporter will work on deadlines throughout the day to produce stories and photos for our print edition, Bakersfield.com, social media, email alerts, and e-edition. This person will report, write, and research stories on any news or feature topic as needed. This reporter will contribute to our social media presence.

The selected reporter must be able to:

  • Carry out all the duties and responsibilities described above.
  • Develop the crime, courts, and public safety beat and build sources in the community.
  • Follow the best practices in journalism, Associated Press style, and search engine optimization.
  • Learn to use and effectively work in a content management system.
  • Be well-organized with excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Qualifications include: 

  • A degree in journalism, communication, or a related field is preferred.
  • Previous experience as a news reporter is required. Experience covering crime, courts, and public safety is a plus, and clips showing evidence of this work are preferred.
  • A proven track record of handling both daily and enterprise news stories.
  • Valid CA driver’s license with acceptable DMV record, independent transportation, and insurance required.
