The Appeal is looking for writers

The Appeal is looking for writers to contribute content for their weekly newsletter that features reported commentary on the criminal legal system.

ABOUT THE COMPANY

The Appeal is a worker-led nonprofit newsroom dedicated to exposing how the U.S. criminal legal system fails to keep people safe and, instead, perpetuates harm.

ABOUT THE ROLE

Two writers are needed to each contribute one newsletter per month. The organization is looking for news-responsive or evergreen pieces on topics related to criminal justice, such as policing, prisons, prosecutors, judges, juvenile incarceration, and more. They also publish criticism of the media’s portrayal of the criminal legal system. Pieces can be either national or local in scope.

All of their pieces are edited, fact-checked, and copy-edited prior to publication on our website and circulation with their mailing list. BIPOC writers and those directly affected by the criminal legal system are especially encouraged to apply.

WHAT TO INCLUDE IN SUBMISSION

  •  Email with your resume and a few sentences introducing yourself
  • Include one to three writing samples
  • Please use the subject line “Appeal Newsletter Writer” in your email.

COMPENSATION

  • $1/word-  800-word pieces for newsletter
