Taos News seeks a sports editor

The Taos News, an independently owned newspaper in Northern New Mexico, is looking to add an ambitious and talented sports editor to its staff.

Through strong photos and reporting, the person selected for this position will have the opportunity to create a weekly sports section for a community that is passionate about their school athletics programs, as well as the many outdoor adventure opportunities that abound here.

The Taos News is the perennial winner of the best small weekly in the U.S. award from the National Newspaper Association. Our staff also takes pride in being honored as one of the top newspapers in the state by the New Mexico Press Association every year.

This is a fantastic opportunity to play a central role in continuing our newspaper’s legacy of outstanding community journalism and grow your career at a weekly known for excellence.

Job requirements:

  • Provide 5-6 stories weekly and take photos of sports events, as needed
  • Work with our editor-in-chief and design team to create a 4-5 page sports section each week
  • Provide reporting for other sections, such as our seasonal magazines, as needed
  • Attend weekly meetings with the editorial staff to strategize about weekly editions and pitch stories
  • Work night and weekends, as needed, to cover important games and events
  • Proficiency with Mac-based operating systems and applications
  • Proficiency with Adobe Photoshop
  • Strong organizational skills and journalistic ethics
  • Previous reporting experience and/or a degree in journalism preferred
