Tampa Bay Business Journal seeks enterprise reporter

The Tampa Bay Business Journal is looking for an aggressive and creative business enterprise reporter.

We’re looking for someone who has a familiarity with politics, who sources relentlessly, wants scoops and gets exclusives, and can tell readers what it means on all of our platforms: web, social media, video and print.

Duties

Successful TBBJ reporters: 1. Own their beats. 2. Widen and deepen their source network every day. 3. Produce compelling, high-impact breaking news and enterprise pieces that are rich in perspective and context. 4. Embrace their responsibility for growing audience. 5. Maintain a daily conversation with their audience. You must be exceptionally curious, internally driven and able to work both independently and collaboratively with editors, designers, photographers, researchers. Ability to receive and provide constructive criticism with enthusiasm and a positive attitude is desired.

Skills

Ability to break news and identify newsworthy events and sources. Solid interview techniques. Strong writing that is clear, accurate and easily understood by a wide range of business readers; analytical and investigative abilities. Able to work under deadline pressure and prioritize tasks appropriately. Experience with using social media to source and promote content. Knowledge of all platforms including print, mobile and online. Must be driven to build audience engagement through higher page views, unique users, repeat visits, direct traffic, social media referrals, paid print subscribers, email newsletter sign-ups, event attendance, and other such metrics.

Chris Roush was the dean of the School of Communications at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut. He was previously Walter E. Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
