As the only general assignment reporting position in the Tampa Bay Business newsroom, this staff position is expected to write and report short-form and long-form stories for the website and weekly print edition as needs dictate. It requires a versatile, hungry self-starter with a passion for news and journalism who can surprise editors with enterprise ideas not covered by other TBBJ beats.
They will also be able to react to release-driven news, but be willing to add original reporting. A successful candidate will craft timely and compelling news stories that drive loyal engagement, grow the audience, and extend the Business Journal brand in the digital space.
The position follows a partially hybrid schedule, with in-office work on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Mondays and Fridays offer flexibility to work remotely, if preferred. Please note that, depending on business needs, additional in-office days may occasionally be required. The role also includes being available to attend evening business events as needed.
The TBBJ general assignment reporter will be tasked with consistently producing newsy, engaging daily online content. They are a key point person in the news organization’s digital-first mission to break news ahead of competitors, post innovative stories, and deliver intel that makes the jobs of local business owners and executives easier. We seek a journalist who loves collaboration internally and externally.
The job requires fast reaction skills (news urgency, solid news judgment, strong headline writing skills and familiarity with SEO. They will thrive on the knowledge gained from site metrics and leverage that to help drive coverage decisions and follow-up. This reporter must be flexible with change, as news priorities can shift daily. They will balance the highest storytelling, reporting, and writing standards with ambitious traffic and engagement objectives. Depending on evolving business needs, duties, responsibilities, work schedules, and/or location may change.
- A bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience, including two to three years of journalism experience, is preferreD
- Strong news judgment, understanding of news writing, journalistic ethics and story structure
- Desire and ability to break news and to identify newsworthy events and sources
- Meticulous eye for detail
- Generate and execute digital content ideas.
- Take a lead in managing and curating two daily newsletters
- Curiosity about people, business leaders and can spot trends
- Passionate about telling stories and through data from surveys, regulatory agencies, other public documents and sources
- Solid Microsoft Excel/spreadsheet skills
- Able to mine and analyze data
- Able to work well as a team, collaborating with reporters and editors.
- Track metrics and help staff identify and deploy tactics to meet traffic and engagement goals.
- Regularly participate in and attend Business Journal-sponsored events
- Manage various social media channels
- Ability to relate comfortably to a wide range of people, in person, on the phone and online
- Proficient with MS Office Products
- Proficient with Web-Based Communication Platforms (Teams, Zoom, Webex, etc.)
