Tallahassee Democrat seeks economic development reporter

The Tallahassee Democrat, a Gannett paper, is seeking a reporter to cover the economic development beat.

Job Specifics:

  • Work independently and with the Engagement Editor/Content Coach for Public Service and Public Service team to develop daily and enterprise reports on business in the Big Bend focusing on workforce development, new business announcements and openings, trends in economic development and efforts by Florida State University, Florida A&M University and Tallahassee Community College to bring new technology to market.
  • Develop and deliver content related to public spending on economic development by city, county and state officials and public bodies. Focus on the actions, spending and policies of public bodies and their impact on economic development.
  • Develop a professional brand as the local expert on economic development and engage with audiences across platforms including social media and events. Represent the Tallahassee Democrat in the community as an authority on economic development.
  • Collaborate on and deliver multimedia content to encourage audience engagement – directed by quantified measurements of success – including video, radio, broadcast partners and public events. Initiate and encourage contributions from advocates and experts to provide content with a special emphasis on reaching 25-to-45-year-old audiences.
  • Gather and present public records – documents, video, audio – for multimedia presentation in support of investigative efforts.
  • Consult and mentor others in the newsroom in investigative methods and procedures, including how to develop stories from inception to final presentation and ongoing coverage.

Typical Job Duties:

  • Creates storytelling that accurately informs, entertains and engages specific audiences and platforms through the use of metrics. Works toward becoming the community’s leading voice in area of expertise.
  • Connects with the community through storytelling and outreach (social media, on camera, forums, community leadership, etc.).
  • Works with the content strategist and audience analyst to evaluate what’s working and what’s not, and develops plans to better satisfy audience needs.
  • Collaborates with content team to provide all the appropriate elements for stories (i.e. photos, videos and graphics). Captures basic photos and video as needed.
  • Provides thoughtful analysis of complex issues.
  • Promotes personal brand, the brands of colleagues and the institutional brand.
  • Provides great customer service, helping readers find answers and solutions.
  • Performs other duties as necessary.
