States Newsroom seeks a reproductive health reporter, The Missouri Independent

Part of States Newsroom, The Independent believes in enlisting and empowering journalists to do impactful, editorial ambitious work.

This experienced reporter will focus exclusively on providing comprehensive coverage of reproductive health issues in Missouri. The Independent’s office is in Jefferson City, but for the right candidate this position can be based anywhere in the state. The reporter will produce daily and enterprise stories, take photos and share content on social media.

This reporter will work with the Editor-in-Chief to track political and legal developments and hold officials accountable through deep source-building and public records requests.

But we’re also looking for a reporter with the expertise to illuminate how the evolving legal and policy landscape in reproductive health affects Missourians, their families, their doctors and their communities.

This grant-funded position is supported through Oct. 31, 2025, with possibility of renewal.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Produce regular, high-quality reporting on the state of reproductive healthcare in Missouri in the post-Dobbs era
  • Contribute regularly to outlet’s briefs section
  • Generate story ideas with the editor
  • Pursue story leads, both self-generated and as assigned, with self-direction and solid news judgment
  • Approach assignments on deadline with strong communication and follow through with the editor and colleagues
  • Collaborate with other reporters and assist with research and pertinent knowledge when/if available
  • Establish and expand social media presence representing the outlet
  • Use personal social media accounts to amplify site’s content
  • Take photos and occasional video to illustrate and amplify stories ‘

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • We’re looking for candidates with at least five years professional news reporting and/or editing experience.
  • Sound news judgment & flexibility.
  • The ability to manage ongoing and short-term projects with strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Bilingual candidates are encouraged to apply.

Authorization to work in the United States is required.

The salary for this position is $65,000. Relocation stipend will be considered.
