Startland News has an opening in its award-winning Kansas City newsroom where empathetic, honest, human-focused storytelling spotlights innovation, entrepreneurship, creativity, and community. This full-time reporting role will amplify the untold stories of Kansas Citians through impact-based, community journalism.
A self-starter with a passion and curiosity for the business and creative world is ideal for this dynamic role. Additional qualities of a star candidate include a passion for social media storytelling, relationship building and face-to-face networking. A solid grasp of AP Style, news and feature writing, and a multimedia skill set is expected.

Qualifications:
- 2+ years professional experience in news, media or reporting
- Passion for business and entrepreneurship reporting
- Willingness to embed in the Kansas City community
- Ability to juggle daily news reporting and social media engagement with long-term projects
- Social media savvy
- Strong organizational skills
- Excellent oral communication and networking skills
- Expert grasp of AP style
- Must work from Startland News’ Kansas City-based newsroom in the Power & Light District
Responsibilities:
- Find and pitch stories
- Work with editors on story angles, headlines, images and SEO
- Write and upload online news stories daily under a strict deadline
- Interview and build rapport with sources in Kansas City
- Attend and report on events, press conferences, etc., occasionally after 5 p.m. and on weekends
- Work with newsroom leaders to conceive story ideas and investigative pieces in multiple formats
- Capture and edit photos and videos
