Stars and Stripes seeks a reporter, Bavaria, Europe

Stars and Stripes, the editorially independent daily newspaper and website covering the U.S. military worldwide, is anticipating a reporter job opening up soon at our bureau in Bavaria.

Bavaria is home to the Army’s largest ranges in Europe and it’s a pivotal training region for NATO and Ukrainian troops. About 40,000 U.S. military service members, their families, Defense Department workers and contractors live in the area.

The beat includes covering the bases and command, but goes beyond that. We’re looking for someone that can spot broader Army issues and develop them into enterprise stories that resonate with a wide audience. The ideal reporter will integrate into community activities and use social media adeptly in order to cultivate relationships, because military officials often don’t volunteer all that much information.

Knowledge of the military is preferred and German language proficiency is a plus, but not required. Sharp news instincts, interviewing skill and writing ability on tight deadlines are essential.

Benefits for those qualified include a substantial housing and utility stipend, a federal pension, tax-free shopping on U.S. bases and the lifestyle that comes with living in Bavaria. The office is located in Grafenwoehr, which is a little over an hour from the cities of Nuremberg and Regensburg.

Stars and Stripes is protected under federal law from censorship or news management by military or government officials. To see what we do, go to www.stripes.com. To let us know you’re interested, send your resume, a letter and clips/links to newsrecruiting@stripes.com. We’ll notify qualified candidates of the application process when the position becomes formally available.
