Sports Business Journal seeks assistant editor

Sports Business Journal is seeking an assistant editor to join our team in Charlotte.

The assistant editor will edit content across all platforms while operating in an award-winning, fast-paced newsroom with the ability to handle multiple tasks seamlessly. The assistant editor will work with editors in helping set direction for the news organization, so understanding and passion for sports business a must.

The assistant editor will work with reporters and researchers on story development, assignments and deadlines. AE will make sure deadlines are adhered to and editorial standards are met. AE will develop, oversee and edit stories, talk and work/coach/train directly with reporters and manage them throughout the day on stories of all types – breaking news, features, data-driven pieces, analysis, profiles and trend pieces.

AE will handle first and second reads, line edits, conceiving and planning research, working with design team and photographer or selecting appropriate and relevant art/images. They will handle proofing pages, writing headlines and ensuring high-quality content at all times.

AE would take lead on specific and assigned projects, features and destination pages, be responsible for them from start to production. Position will be expected to play a role in content planning around SBJ editorial conferences, including panel ideas, format and speakers. Also will regularly participate in and attend editorial meetings, roundtables and SBJ sponsored events.

JOB DUTIES/REQUIRED SKILLS:
Knowledge of InDesign a bonus. Hands-on experience in guiding large projects, strong news judgement and strong organizational and line-editing/copy editing skills. Strong sense for story development. Must be flexible and comfortable in fast-changing deadline-driven environment. Must have experience meeting tight deadlines. Experience with data-driven projects a plus. Looking for people who can work with and develop/coach talent; knowledgeable in social media and how news can be elevated through social platforms.

EXPERIENCE
Prior reporting and editing experience in print or digital in an active deadline-driven newsroom. Knowledge of sports business, its people and concepts. Strong ideation and creative planning skills. Solid news judgement and ability to work with and coach writers. Must be a team player who will jump into stories and tasks with flexibility. Must have experience meeting deadlines and overseeing large editorial projects.

JOB EDUCATION:
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
