Southern California News Group seeks an assistant reporter

Trying to get into the reporter world? Curious about fast-paced news and journalism? We’re seeking an organized, journalism-minded person for the role of news assistant for the Coastal publications and websites for Southern California News Group. The Torrance Daily Breeze is looking for an assistant reporter! If you feel like your experience aligns with the details below, come work with us!

What you will do:

  • Successful candidate will manage calendars, write event advances, manage community content, write a weekly column on non-profit agencies and engage in some local government reporting. It’s a busy gig but a fun one — and it’s a great “foot in the door” for journalists to get their start on a reporting career
  • The role is based on the LA County Coast, performing tasks for the Press-Telegram in Long Beach, Daily Breeze in the South Bay/Torrance, the Beach Reporter in Redondo, Hermosa and Manhattan Beach and the Grunion in Long Beach
  • The position is 25 hours a week, with a flexible work schedule
  • The position will be largely virtual, with in-person coverage assignments in the communities listed above required

What you will bring:

  • Some experience in reporting is desired but we will consider journalism students and recent graduates
  • Strong news judgment
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Promising writing and reporting skills
  • Understanding of social media
  • Basic photo and/or video skills appreciated

Salary: The hourly wage is $14.00 – $15.00.
