Southern California News Group seeks a city hall reporter

We’re seeking a reporter to cover local government news in the city of Long Beach in Southern California, for The Press-Telegram, a news organization with a century-old legacy. This is a great beat in a fascinating city. The home of the iconic Queen Mary, Long Beach is the seventh-largest city in California and the second-largest in Los Angeles County. The city’s streets host the annual Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach, one of the largest street races in the world. It’s also home to the nation’s second-largest cargo port, the Aquarium of the Pacific, a burgeoning aerospace and technology industry and  81 miles of beaches. The city is also a great source of news. The city grapples with the state’s housing crisis and issues of housing density. The quest for social justice and police accountability make high-profile headlines here consistently. Environmental issues are also top of mind here, with the port — a longtime source of air-quality concerns — making strides toward cleaner energy. And it’s one of the nation’s most diverse cities, too.

What you will do:

  • Get news posted swiftly and accurately
  • Produce polished, focused enterprise that makes a difference, as well as timely breaking news in a competitive market
  • Cultivate sources in person and as well as via social media
  • Operate virtually in the field and fully connect with the community

What you will bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in journalism or related field
  • Strong news judgment
  • 3-4 years experience reporting desired but we will consider experienced reporters with demonstrated abilities
  • Excellent writing and reporting skills, including knowledge of AP style
  • Strong understanding of social media
  • Basic photo and/or video skills appreciated

The hourly wage range is $19.23-$24.04.
